The Border Curling Club was formed in 1955 with the support of Butterfield Company, a division of UTD, for the benefit of employees and local residents. One of these, an avid curler, became president of UTD in Athol, MA. He founded Petersham Curling Club in 1960. The two clubs became known as “sister clubs”.
The Canusa bonspiel started out as an interclub tournament between the two clubs. As years went by more clubs from both Canada and the US participated.
In the 1980’s as many as 20 teams competed and the format had changed to include a separate theme each year and mixed gender on each team. Participants dressed in costumes that reflected the current theme for the Saturday evening dinner and dance. Canusa became the flagship tournament for the Border Curling club and has successfully continued until this day.
This year the skip and 3rd must be of a different gender and the theme is “Murder & Mysteries.
